A Beginner’s Guide to Reiki

Perhaps you have read something about Reiki a few times or you have friends and family that talk about it. You somehow become curious as to how it works. Does it involve years of practice? Is it something that can be done in the comfort of your home? Do you have to visit psychic websites to learn the skill and hone it? These questions are normal, that is why we’ve come up with this very simple beginner’s guide to the healing powers of Reiki. We hope that this article helps you learn a little more about this craft so you can apply it in your daily lives.

Many people who use Reiki would probably say that Reiki is for everyone, regardless of social status, beliefs, or even religion. Reiki, simply, is the way in which you work with spiritual energies. Most people think that the energy itself is called Reiki, but that is not right as the energy is plainly nameless. The method, however, of using and channeling this energy, then, is called Reiki. You could say “I am able to channel Reiki.” This is the correct way of saying it, as Reiki is a loose translation of “universal spiritual energy.”

The creator of Reiki who was a Buddhist, Mikao Usui, lived centuries ago in Japan. It was said that it took him around 20 long years to achieve his Satori and be able to learn Reiki without the help of others. A faster path you could become a Reiki practitioner is called attunement, or sometimes Initiation.

You will probably come across self-help books or CDs with instructions on how you can practice Reiki. These materials can be misleading as most of the time, you will need to be attuned by a Reiki Master. Becoming attuned by someone ensures you receive the pure Reiki energy and the energy is much stronger, which will help you achieve your healing ability much quicker.

A Little History of Reiki

Mikao Usui was a Japanese Buddhist who rediscovered Reiki centuries ago. Mikao Usui had meditated alone on Mount Kurama, attuned to the energy of Reiki, and began to share his wisdom and knowledge to the people he knew. This important and significant knowledge was then passed on to thousands others including Reiki teachers like Hayashi who taught Takata the art of Reiki which she later brought to the United States of America.

This was where Reiki began to blossom all over the world. Now, in the age of fast internet connection, you can easily find a Reiki teacher to initiate you so you could start your own Reiki healing practice.

Initiation into Reiki

As you will have read earlier, Reiki is about the universal energy. It matters not what religion you choose to believe in, the car that you use to drive to work, or who you are as a person. If you are willing and interested to become a Reiki practitioner then all you have to do is to find a Reiki teacher who will provide you with the energy attunements. Some teachers may give attunements for free, but more often Master teachers will charge you a fee. It goes with the universal rule that energies need to be exchanged. Your Reiki teacher would give you the universal energy for a cost.

Attunement, or the Reiki initiation, is really simple. Your Reiki teacher will expand your energetic channels. Your energetic channels are called different names in different parts of the globe. In China, it’s called Meridians; in India, it is referred to as Nadi, or most commonly as energy channels. Your Reiki teacher will help you prepare for the transfer of energy for channeling Reiki. This process of channeling can take up to 30 minutes or so but it does not tire you in anyway. You are allowed to keep your clothes on during the attunement process and all you need to do is relax with the intention of receiving the energy attunement. You will not be forced to pray to any specific deity, entity or God. All you have to do is to sit back and relax while your Reiki teacher gets busy providing you with the initiation. You do not have anything to worry about because it is absolutely safe.  The cost or rate of initiation does vary, though, and although there may be some that charge you a higher price, such as $100, this is not an indication that the energy is any better than someone who charged $20.

It is highly recommended that you take the individual levels yourself rather than attending a group. Individual courses give you more way to ask meaningful questions to your teacher while being able to receive detailed and precise answers from him or her. A course usually takes about a day or two, although some Reiki teachers prefer students to take the course over a full week or longer. Although your attunement can be done face-to-face the distant energy attunement is equally as effective and many people report the energy is very strong.

Benefits of Reiki

To practice Reiki is to practice healing, not only physically, but also mentally and spiritually. Reiki helps you to clear your mind from negative patterns. It helps you heal from physical illnesses that many hospitals feel are almost impossible to heal.

Reiki is one way for you to develop your psychic abilities as well because it cleanses your chakras and removes blockages. When this happens, your intuition becomes stronger.

Reiki brings balance into your life and helps you solve your personal problems, whether it has something to do with your career or family. It brings harmony back into your life.

Reiki also gives you the ability to help other people by channeling Reiki to them. Not only people, but also plants and animals. Reiki helps you to heal anything.

These are just some of the many benefits of Reiki. Of course, you will learn many more once you have become attuned yourself. We hope this article has given you the basic information you need to satisfy your curiosity about Reiki and has encouraged you to try Reiki for yourself, whether that is to receive a healing reiki session or to consider becoming attuned to Reiki to help others.
